Student Media

App State Student Media is committed to the support and display of responsible, ethical media to engage, inform and enrich the lives of the campus and local community. Student Media provides an outlet for the free expression and exchange of ideas, concerns and information. Housed within Student Media are The Appalachian Student News Organization and The Peel Literature and Arts Review. These publications provide an environment for students to learn and practice skills in responsible communication, journalism, art, production, business, leadership and new media.

Student Media Learning Outcomes

Behavioral/Performance - “Do”

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively by creating a portfolio of multimedia that exemplifies skills in research, interviews and digital media.

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to demonstrate time management skills by meeting weekly production deadlines.

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to work in a team environment by creating group multimedia pieces.

Value - “Think”

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to articulate and list ethical responsibilities media has to their community members and society as a whole.

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to explain reasons why sensitivity, awareness and respect to cultural diversity in media practices is important.

Cognitive - “Know”

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to use media literacy to analyze and evaluate mass media messages and their consequences.

As a result of participating in student media, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of communication and media by explaining the present and anticipating the future of the field.

As a result of participating in student media, students will come to understand how media functions as a business by describing the relationship between the editorial and business operations of the organization.
